Swagatham - Croeso - Welcome to 'Ayo Gorkhali!' where we celebrate the history and legacy of the British Gurkhas and their enduring ties with the people of the United Kingdom and with Wales in particular.

The Gurkhas are soldiers from Nepal, famous for their bravery, ferocity and strength of character - but who exactly are they? Where do they come from? And how do they come to be here in the UK? The answers to these questions and many others can be found in our interactive Timeline and in the Gurkhas section of the site. This site takes its name from the Gurkha battle cry, ‘Jai Mahakali, Ayo Gorkhali!’ (‘Victory to goddess Mahakali, the Gurkhas are here!').

Please check out our newly-launched image Galleries which we will be updating every month and send us your feedback and suggestions. You can also join us on Facebook and Twitter.
Dhanyabad - Diolch - Thank you.

The history of the British Gurkhas is an epic tale, made up of countless individual stories; generations of hardship, service and self-sacrifice; terrible wars, exceptional valour and on-going battles.

Explore the Timeline's four eras: 'Mythic Beginnings' starts in 800 BCE (Before the Common Era or 'BC') with the Kirati Dynasty; the second era, 'Soldiers of Empire', covers the rise of Nepal's 'Gorkha Raj' (Gurkha Empire), the 1814-16 Anglo-Gorkha War and the First and Second World Wars, while 'Last Days of the Raj' looks at the enormous changes that followed Indian Independence in 1947 and the 'Modern Gurkha Era' traces how coming to the UK after the 1997 Handover of Hong Kong has affected Gurkhas, their families and the rights of Gurkha veterans.

Please tell us what you think should be in the Timeline.
